A week or so after posting this message, I discovered that a Master's thesis on the Uncanny in The Ring (both versions) was written by Sara McKay Ball at North Carolina State U, in 2006. It looks fascinating.

Ball, Sara McKay. "THE UNCANNY IN JAPANESE AND AMERICAN HORROR FILM: HIDEO NAKATA’S RINGU AND GORE VERBINSKI’S RING." Thesis. North Carolina State University. Raleigh, NC: 2006.

The name is definitely from the original Japanese version (which I have not seen); the girl's name in the American remake is Samara.
The Ring: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0298130/
Ringu: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0178868/

I'd take a look at The Grudge too. It's not as good as The Ring, in my opinion, but there are some creepy gazes from childlike (Japanese) haunts in this movie as well.
